Switching from ChatGPT? Do these three things first.
Almost everyone gets the first five minutes wrong and then wonders why Claude "doesn't know them". Three moves and you're ahead of 99% of people who just switched.
1. Turn on memory
Without it, every chat starts from zero.
- Open Claude → your profile → Settings.
- Open Capabilities.
- Turn on Memory.
Now Claude carries your context across every chat. If you don't see the switch, it may not be on your plan yet — check Anthropic's help pages for the current rollout.
2. Move your ChatGPT history over — in one move
Years of context, inherited in a minute.
- In ChatGPT: Settings → Data controls → Export data. You get an email with a zip file.
- Unzip it. Inside is a file called conversations.json.
- Open a new Claude chat, upload that file, and paste the prompt below.
If the file is too big to upload: ask Claude to help you split it — "Write me a small script that splits conversations.json into chunks of 200 conversations" — then feed the chunks one by one with "continue building the same profile".
3. Install skills from Anthropic's free courses
Anthropic publishes free courses and certifications for using Claude. Don't read them all — let Claude pull what fits you and turn it into instructions it follows from now on.
- Go to Anthropic's learning hub: anthropic.com/learn.
- Copy the link of the course or track that matches your job.
- Paste it into Claude with the prompt below.

This is my full ChatGPT conversation history (conversations.json). Read it and build a profile of me: 1. WHO I AM — role, business, what I work on, where I'm based 2. PROJECTS — every ongoing project or recurring topic, with what stage it seems to be at 3. HOW I LIKE ANSWERS — length, tone, format, things that annoy me (infer from how I corrected ChatGPT) 4. TOOLS I USE — software, platforms, languages 5. OPEN THREADS — things I asked about repeatedly but never seemed to finish 6. WHAT NOT TO ASSUME — anything that changed over time (old job, abandoned projects) Then: - write the profile as a compact page I can read in 2 minutes - save the important parts to your memory so you remember me in future chats - ask me the 3 questions you still can't answer from the file

Read the course. Pull out the 10 lessons that matter MOST for someone in my role. One line each, practical, no theory. 2. Turn those into instructions you will follow with me from now on — write them as a short "how to work with [my name]" block. 3. Save that block to memory. 4. Give me 3 things to try today that use what you just learned.
