There isn't one Claude. There are three.
Chat, Cowork, Code. Most people use one for everything and wonder why it feels limited. Match the tool to the job and everything changes. This is the map I use.

| Have something run automatically | Claude Cowork | "Every morning at 8, read yesterday's emails and give me one summary." Set it once, it runs. |
| Do a task with several steps | Claude Cowork | Research → summarise → turn into a presentation. It works through the steps on its own. |
| Build an app, a site, a tool | Claude Code | It writes the code, runs it, fixes the bugs, hands you a working version. |
| Automate your own files and folders | Claude Code | It lives in your terminal with access to your machine. Rename, sort, convert, generate — at scale. |

The conversation
claude.ai in the browser or the app. Where you write, ask, research and think. Upload files, use projects, turn on memory.
Starter: "Here are three things I wrote. Learn my tone, then draft [X] the way I'd write it."
The colleague
The desktop app for work that has steps or a schedule. You describe the outcome; it plans, does the steps, and can run on a timer.
Starter: "Every Monday 8:00: read my calendar and inbox, list what needs a decision from me this week."
The builder
Runs in your terminal, works on your actual files. Websites, tools, automations, data — anything that ends as software or a finished folder.
Starter: "Build me a one-page site from this brief. Cream background, one call to action. Open it when done."
The one rule
If the job is words, it's Chat. If the job is steps or a schedule, it's Cowork. If the job ends as software or files, it's Code. When you're not sure, start in Chat and ask it which one to use — it knows.
